Governor Burnside appoints a J.P.

Union general and onetime commander of the Army of the Potomac; the distinctive whiskers he sported gave rise to the word “sideburns.” DS, signed “A. E. Burnside,” one page, 14 x 8.5, State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations letterhead, June 6, 1868. Burnside, as governor of Rhode Island, appoints Daniel N. Paine to Justice of the Peace in the town of Smithfield. Signed at the bottom in black ink by Burnside and countersigned by his Secretary of State. In fine condition, with three vertical storage folds, a couple creases through portion of signature and a light shade of toning. R&R COA.
