Description

Back on dry land: Farragut withholds payment and orders some “parking space” for horses

Commander-in-chief of the U.S. Navy during the Civil War (1801–1870). ALS signed “D. G. Farragut, Admiral U.S.,” one page, 5.5 x 8.5, December 2, 1869. Farragut writes to E. M. Benjamin. In part: “It was not my intention to embarrass you withholding the money, but it was simply because I had not the statement for which I have frequently written, to enable me to judge of the amount required. I wished to avail myself of the fall of gold, to purchase. I sent you yesterday an additional five thousand ($5000) dollars. Mr. Stannus wrote to me requesting a stable to be built in the rear of his store. You can build this of wood, provided it does not materially affect the insurance….” Matted and framed together with an unsigned period engraving to an overall size of 17 x 15. In fine condition, with slight feathering of ink. R&R COA.
