Decatur seeks assistance for a soldier “who I believe you know is deranged in his mind, in consequence of having a fever.”

Naval officer. He commanded five different privateer vessels during the American Revolution and became a captain in the U.S. Navy in 1798. In command of the USS Delaware, he captured the first prize in the undeclared war with France. LS, one page both sides, 7.75 x 10, January 25, 1802. Decatur asks Representative William Jones for assistance for a sick soldier’s family. In part, “This will be handed to you by Mrs. Baker, wife of Capt. Thomas Baker, late of the Navy, who goes on to Washington for the purpose of soliciting for half pay for her husband, who I believe you know is deranged in his mind, in consequence of having a fever, when commanding the Delaware Sloop of War…Capt. B’s family are in a very distressed situation…I have no doubt, but your interference in behalf of this distressed family will be of great service.” In very good condition, with light toning, a couple small stains and holes, not affecting text or signature and a few small separations along mailing folds.
