Description

Inscribing to an American officer two days before being shipped off to the Nuremberg Trials

Decorated German World War I ace (1893–1946) who rose through the Nazi ranks to become head of the Luftwaffe and one of Hitler’s most trusted associates. Striking vintage matte-finish 5 x 7 photo, a half-length portrait of a medal-laden Göring holding an elaborate ceremonial baton, signed and inscribed in fountain pen, “Mr. Bock, Hermann Göring, Reichsmarschall, Mondorf, 10 August 1945.” Following his capture in May 1945, Göring, along with other top-ranking Nazi officials, was held in a prison in Mondorf, Luxembourg for interrogation. He reportedly enjoyed the company of his captors and evidently presented this photo to Sergeant Robert Bock as a friendly token. Two days after signing this photo, Göring was transported to Nuremberg to face the trial that would lead to his conviction—and, just hours before his scheduled execution, his suicide by smuggled cyanide capsule. In fine, clean condition, with two very faint corner bends, one with unobtrusive pin-sized loss to emulsion in background. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
