Description

Hindenburg sends an anti-Semitic diatribe to a prominent Jewish lawyer who lost a son in the war

Military hero of WWI and president of Germany from 1925 to 1934. TLS in German, signed “von Hindenburg,” one page, 9 x 11.5, October 13, 1919. Letter to Senator Dr. Meyer, who had lost a son in the war. In part, “Current attacks on the Jewry are directed against that unwholesome segment of your co- religionists whose power and dangerousness our poor Fatherland has felt especially in the last difficult years. I owe the German people this explanation. Whatever an individual may say is powerless against this. Only the rational influence of the better segment of the Jews on those elements that unfortunately are very much in evidence with their selfishness, profiteering, and lack of patriotism can resolve an issue with such profound ramifications in the life and feelings of our people. I would be genuinely pleased if this way were successful.” Accompanied by the original mailing envelope. In fine condition, with bisecting mailing folds and some scattered light wrinkling. R&R COA.
