Description

British painter who was also a pioneering film maker. He established a studio in Lululand and directed a number of historical costume dramas, designed to be shown accompanied by his own music. ALS, three pages on two adjoining sheets, 7 x 4.5, Dyreham Cottage letterhead, February 17, 1896. Letter to Dr. Wood extolling praises on a young student and mentioning several prominent artists. In part, “I am happy to say I can heartily refute all this rumour! Rumour will not let anybody alone…Your ‘boy’ flourishes grandly. My picture of Chelsea Pensioners is being engraved…A few days before sending it to the Academy my present large oil painting will be exhibited at their gallery. I will of course order a ticket for you…Tadema’s pictured will be there &…Goodall’s. I work very hard economizing time carefully. Vigilantly watching my health…& painting, for the true love of art & not of money making merely!…I have at last satisfied a burning desire…studying the Anatomy & Physiology of the bran in all its forms.” In fine condition, with three vertical mailing folds and a touch of mild toning.
