He went on to enjoy success as a character actor, perhaps most memorably as Gloria Swanson’s faithful butler in the 1950 classic Sunset Boulevard. In full: “Although I am far away—I am with you in spirit—not only today—but always!!! Please accept the 21 roses and the crest ring as a small token of my undying love for you with my best wishes for your health & happiness!!!” After signing, he adds, “The fortune teller said you would get a ring!” In fine condition, with a few light brushes.
