Description

Keller desperately appeals for funds while keeping vigil by Sullivan’s bedside: “For five years the hand of the depression have been heavy upon us”

Keller was, at one time, the most famous handicapped person in the world. A severe fever at age 19 months left Keller blind and deaf. At age six Keller met Anne Sullivan (later Anne Sullivan Macy), the teacher who taught Keller the alphabet, thereby opening the world to her. Keller became an excellent student and eventually attended Radcliffe College, where she graduated with honors in 1904. During her lifetime Keller was regarded as one of America’s most inspirational figures. TLS, two pages, 7 x 9.5, personal letterhead, December 19. Letter to Mr. Sanders in regards to a donation for the blind. In part, “I am writing this letter from the Doctor’s Hospital where my beloved teacher is being treated after a long illness. The night that covers me has descended upon her. For nearly a year she has been unable to read a word, and now she cannot see even dimly the beautiful view from the great windows of the hospital which overlook the East River, and which the rising sun turns to gold…In the past you have assisted the American Foundation for the Blind to be a Friend for all the sightless. Through your generosity the activities of the Foundation have gradually expanded until they reach every corner of our country. But for five years the hand of the depression have been heavy upon us, and unless you come again to our aid, the work we are doing will be immeasurably retarded.” Signed at the conclusion in pencil, “Helen Keller.” In fine condition, with light shade of toning to second page and bisecting mailing folds. R&R COA.
