British Naval officer best known for the sinking the German battleship Bismarck. In June 1943, Tovey became Commander-in-Chief, the Nore, with responsibility for controlling the East coast convoys and organizing minesweeping operations. A couple of months later he was promoted to Admiral of the Fleet. ALS signed “Jack Tovey,” one page both sides, 4.5 x 7, Admiralty House letterhead, November 22, 1943. Letter of thanks to Captain Ronald Fraser for his letter of congratulations on Tovey’s promotion to Admiral of the Fleet. In part, “You probably realise better than many others the scandal of it; but, of course, like the other stripes and honours that have rained on me in the last few years, it is really a well-deserved tribute to the grand officers & men I have served with.” Accompanied by a war-dated commendation from February, 1945 to Fraser, signed in black ink by Tovey as Admiral of the Fleet.
