Description

Striking 1677 royal patent for a “genealogicall” history of the British throne

British monarch who ushered in the Restoration in 1660 and ruled until his death in 1685. Unlike his father, Charles I, whose mismanagement of British affairs led to his own execution and the Protectorate of Oliver Cromwell, Charles II proved to be a powerful, capable leader. Manuscript DS, signed “Charles R,” one page, 9 x 13, January 3, 1677. A beautifully penned royal patent granting Francis Landford, “who hath employed himself near Fifteene yeares in the compileing a Genealogicall History of the Kings of England, and Monarchs of Great Brittaine from the Conquest Ano. 1066 to this present yeare … leave and License to Print the said Book.” In very good condition, with folds, mild toning, and some faint scattered soiling and spotting, scarcely detracting from the overall impressive appearance. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
