Description

Mentioning the play that would become Burning Bright

ALS signed “John,” one page in pencil on a lightly lined 8 x 12 sheet, no date [envelope postmarked August 9, 1950]. Steinbeck writes to artist William Ward Beecher. In full: Enclosed is the thing I would like to have on the picture. It is from the end of Forests. And it is I believe what I think. And I think it would be a good thing to put on the picture. Don’t you? Thanks for sending the rest so soon. We are going back to the country now.” After signing, Steinbeck adds a postscript: “You can put it on the painting just this way.” Accompanied by the original mailing envelope addressed in Steinbeck’s hand. In fine condition, with folds, mild toning, trivial paperclip stain, and a few tiny edge chips. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
