Description

Between signing the Declaration of Independence and serving on the Supreme Court, Chase attempts to settle a hotly contested estate

Signer of the Declaration of Independence from Maryland and Associate Justice of the Supreme Court from 1796 to 1811. DS, three pages on two adjoining 9.25 x 14.25 sheets, June 2, 1787. A manuscript legal document related to the settlement of the estate of Joseph Nicholson, which had evidently led to a heated dispute among the decedent’s heirs. Accompanied by several pages of early dealer documentation and a circa 1950s transcript on Lincoln Library letterhead. In very good condition, with folds (partial separations touching a few words of the text), light toning and scattered soiling (slightly touching signature), light spots and stains, folds and wrinkling, and edge wear with a few small chips and tears. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
