Description

Lindbergh thanks a senator for his “assistance and consideration during the time I was in Washington to testify before the Foreign Relations Committee”

TLS signed “Charles A. Lindbergh,” one page, 8.5 x 11, January 27, 1941. Letter to Senator Hamilton Fish. In full, “Before more time passes, I want to thank you for your assistance and consideration during the time I was in Washington to testify before the Foreign Relations Committee. I expecially [sic] enjoyed having dinner at your home the previous evening and lunch during the noon recess of the Committee. I hope you will extend my thanks to Mrs. Fish for both these occasions. I returned the corrected manuscript to Mr. Bloom, Special Delivery, this afternoon. It should be in his office early tomorrow morning. I hope it may be possible to forward the proof copy of my testimony to General Wood as he is very anxious to obtain it prior to the time he testifies before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. General Wood is, I believe, one of the most able and effective men on our side of the war issue.” Lindbergh also adds a brief handwritten postscript, “Your telegram has just arrived. Many thanks. C. A. L.” At the time, Lindbergh was making increasingly strident speeches for the isolationist America First Committee, accusing American Jews of causing the war and predicting Britain’s downfall. He was soon called before the Foreign Relations Committee to explain his views and defend charges of collaboration with the Nazis. In fine condition, with two horizontal mailing folds and a trivial, small tear to upper right edge. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
