Description

A week after leaving office, Taft urges a congressman, “We need men in Congress of your independence and breadth of view”

TLS signed “Wm. H. Taft,” one page, 7 x 9.25, personal letterhead, March 9, 1913. Letter to Representative Richard Bartholdt, written just a week after leaving the Presidency. In part, “I…sincerely hope that you are not going to carry out your threat to leave public office. The truth is, we need men in Congress of your independence and breadth of view, and only as we retain a nucleus of experienced leaders can we hope to form a wise controlling majority in subsequent elections.” In fine condition, with several horizontal mailing folds and a bit of light soiling. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
