Goethe seeks a map as he prepares to write an article on the Battle of Lübeck

German writer, scientist, and philosopher (1749–1832) who takes a place among the central intellectual and artistic figures of his day. His poetry and dramatic works provided source material for Beethoven, Schubert, and Berlioz, among others. ALS signed “Goethe,” one page on 6.5 x 4 sheet with a printed ornamental border, May 8, 1807. Goethe writes to Eichstädt. In full (translated): “You excellence will receive herewith a leaf about the battle near Eylau [which took place on February 7–8, 1807]. Can you send me a map of the Battle of Lübeck? I will very soon write a small article about that. The bigger one about the campaign of the Hohenloher I will send shortly.” In very good condition, with small marginal ink number in another hand, a light central fold, and a few light spots.
