Highly regarded American painter (1889–1975) who was one of the leading figures of the “Regionalist” school of the 1930s and 1940s. ALS signed “Tom,” one page on the correspondence side of a 5.75 x 4 postcard featuring a view of the cathedral in Florence, no date [postmarked November 13, 1965]. Benton writes to well-known columnist Leonard Lyons at the New York Post. In part: “After having worked at wax sculpting for five weeks (one little figure accomplished) we are now turned tourist…. This is a great (3d visit) inexhaustible place for an old painter who still knows he has a lot to learn.” In very good condition, with light toning and scattered soiling, a few light bends, small ink notation in another hand, and several small blots and light brushes to writing (including signature).
