Maine-born Union major general (1828–1914) who was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his defense of Little Round Top at Gettysburg. He later served as governor of Maine and president of Bowdoin College. Signature in the form of a return address, “Joshua L. Chamberlain, Brunswick, Maine,” on a 5.25 x 4.25 postal cover addressed in another hand to Frank Kellogg in Melrose, Massachusetts and postmarked April 3, 1901. In very good condition, with all over toning, scattered light soiling and rubbing, a few small edge tears and chips from opening (tiny edge tear slightly touching signature), and expected postal processing wear.
