Description

“Nothing more was meant - certainly least of all, not any disapproval of some word or work of mine would have been dignified by stamping upon it”

English poet who perfected the dramatic monologue in such works as My Last Duchess and Soliloquy of the Spanish Cloister. ALS, one page both sides, 4.5 x 7, personal letterhead, December 29, 1886. Letter to W. J. Rolfe. In full, “Pray accept my thanks for the letter of Nov. 23 and the ‘selections’ which followed soon after. I have also received from Dr. Farnivak the notification of the note to which I was obliged to object: as it now seems, the note is quite proper - and I thank you for the invitation. With respect to your questions: the ‘head’ is entitled to a higher honor ‘whiteness’ than the ‘root’ which is adequately represented by the ‘warmness’; nothing more was meant - certainly least of all, not any disapproval of some word or work of mine would have been dignified by stamping upon it. As for ‘twist’ I never saw the word except in the Commonwealth Ballad about in Harry Vani, quite recently there has been suggested a derivation from ‘towel’ by misprint: I know nothing more.” In fine condition, with a bisecting horizontal fold and mounting remnants to reverse of integral second page. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA. Featured collection item.
