Hawthorne, Surveyor,” on an off-white 3 x 1 slip clipped from a larger document or letter, most likely from the 1840s while Hawthorne worked at the Customs House in Salem, Massachusetts. Double matted with an engraved portrait, a color portrait of Hawthorne and a small name plate, to an overall size of 19.5 x 10. In fine condition, with some mild toning, a bit heavier to edges.
