Description

“Little Giant” with a tender heart: Senator Douglas pleads for the discharge of a soldier needed at home by a family “who are entirely destitute & helpless and solely dependent upon him for means of subsistence”

Eminent American senator and statesman (1813–1861), dubbed the “Little Giant,” perhaps best remembered for his role in the Lincoln-Douglas debates during the 1858 campaign for the Senate race in Illinois. ALS signed “S. A. Douglas,” one page both sides, 8 x 10, April 14, 1852. Douglas writes to the Secretary of War, Charles Magill Conrad. In full: “I have received several letters & petitions from citizens of Chicago Ills. asking me to apply to you for the discharge from the Army of William Bouyler of Bragg's Artillery now at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri, who enlisted in Sept. 1850 at Saint Louis. The reasons assigned for the application are that he is the son of a Widow Lady residing at Chicago with a large family who are entirely destitute & helpless and solely dependent upon him for means of subsistence. The persons applying on behalf of the family for his discharge are among our most worthy & respected citizens including the Catholic bishop and several pastors of churches. It is a case appealing earnestly to our sympathies & I sincerely hope you will find it consistent with your duty & feelings to grant their request. I have the honor to be very truly your obedient servant.” In fine condition, with folds, scattered mild toning and soiling, a few smudges within text, and a few tiny holes and chips at left edge. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
