Description

Fleeing America after his infant son’s kidnapping and murder, fearful father Lindbergh expresses concern for his remaining child: “We do not know how long we will remain here. I think that will depend largely on how much time must pass before conditions at home will permit us to live normally and with reasonable safety for our son”

ALS signed “Charles A. Lindbergh,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 7, Adelphi Hotel letterhead, January 2, 1936. In full, “I want to thank you for your letter and tell you what great assistance Mr. Gregory gave us on our arrival in Liverpool. We were able to leave New York quietly with the help of Mr. Von Glahn. However, under the conditions surrounding our arrival at Liverpool it would have been very difficult for us had it not been for Mr. Gregory. He assisted us greatly, not only in landing and reaching our hotel, but also with the press situation which was somewhat difficult for a short time. Anne and I are deeply grateful to you for arranging for him to be here. We plan on leaving for Wales in the morning to visit Aubrey Morgan at his father’s home near Cardiff. From our experience in the few days since we landed I believe that we will be able to live very quietly in England. We do not know how long we will remain here. I think that will depend largely on how much time must pass before conditions at home will permit us to live normally and with reasonable safety for our son.” Lindbergh also writes a brief postscript, “Anne and I are looking forward to seeing you before very long.” In very good condition, with a light shade of toning, professional repair to a complete separation along a bisecting horizontal fold, affecting one line of text and some mild showthrough from text on reverse. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
