Description

As the Civil War looms, Sumner references Thomas Macaulay’s address to Parliament on the American slave trade

ALS, three pages on two adjoining sheets, 7 x 8.5, March 22, 1860. Sumner, as senator, writes to W. H. Whitmore, Esq. In part: “I know well that some of Macaulay’s earlier efforts are to be found in Knight’s; but I have not lately found an opportunity to peruse them…. I doubt not that you remember well his most biting speech in the House of Commons in 1845 on the internal[?] slave-trade of our country.” Thomas Macaulay (1800–1859) was a British writer, politician, and abolitionist who vigorously opposed the British slave trade in the West Indies and was instrumental in bringing about its demise. In fine condition, with folds, mild toning, and a few scattered spots of light soiling. R&R COA.
