Distinguished statesman and three-time presidential candidate who became known the “Great Compromiser” for his support of the Union prior to the Civil War. ALS signed “H. Clay,” one page, 8 x 9.75, April 10, 1829. Clay writes to John Woods, editor of the Hamilton Intelligencer. In part: “I read your address to the public, with pleasure, and concur with you in most of the sentiments and opinions which it expresses. I should ask you to place me among your subscribers, but for the difficulty of remitting, from time to time, the amount of the subscription. From late events, the vocation of Editor seems to be in the direct road to honor and preferment. If some of the worst have been this elevated, what ought not the good and the virtuous to expect?” The adjoining sheet bears the integral address panel written in Clay’s hand. Integral second page is addressed in Clay’s hand and franked in another hand. In very good condition, with folds (tiny edge separations and chips), scattered toning and light soiling, text a shade light but fully legible. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
