Early Buchanan letter to the North Carolina politician who developed the poinsettia

LS, one page, 8 x 10, December 26, 1839. Buchanan cosigns a letter to the Honorable J[oel] R[oberts] Poinsett, the North Carolina politician who was America’s first Ambassador to Mexico and who, in a colorful display of versatility and industry, developed the bright red flowering plant that was named in his honor. In part: “We have the honor to enclose a petition [not present] in favor of the appointment of Mr. Christopher Lamberton to the Office of Military Storekeeper at Pikesville, Md.” In fine condition, with mailing folds (one through signature) with short edge separations and tape reinforcements to reverse showing through slightly.
