In part: “There was never the slightest question in my mind of Judge Marshall’s ability to serve the Court with distinction. his experience, his wisdom, and his demonstrated good judgment dispelled all doubt. Your enthusiastic endorsement adds to my confidence that he will join the roster of eminent justices who have strengthened the institutions upon which our nation was founded—and upon which it will continue to grow in greatness.” The appointment of Marshall, the first black justice on the Supreme Court, was confirmed by the Senate on August 30, 1967.
