Clean and sober: Rare Bill Wilson photo inscribed to a pioneering member of Al-Anon

Cofounder of Alcoholics Anonymous, the treatment program which has helped millions of people recover from a disease long stigmatized and regarded as irreversible. Vintage matte-finish 8 x 10 head-and-shoulders photo, signed and inscribed in blue ballpoint, “Dear Arbutus, With my gratitude for your example of all that’s Al Anon, Ever, Bill, NY Apr ’62.” Arbutus O’Neal, a pioneering member of Al-Anon (the Alcoholics Anonymous–affiliated support group for family members of alcoholics), first started attending Al-Anon meetings in 1948 and was a longtime delegate to the Al-Anon Service Conference. Accompanied by two unsigned photos of Wilson and O’Neal posing together from O’Neal’s personal collection. In very good condition, with overall silvering to darker areas of image and background, light creasing to left edge and forehead area, some other light surface creasing to inscription and sentiment, tape to edges of reverse, and a few light spots. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
