Description

Collins supports a tribute to a fellow Apollo astronaut

ALS, one page, 8.5 x 11, August 26, 1985. Collins pens an ALS at the bottom of a TLS written by Postmaster John Jensen, Sr. The letter from Jensen reads, "After much thought, I have decided to present a proposal to the Postmaster General of the United States for the issuance of a postage stamp, in honor of the three U.S. Astronauts that died in the tragic fire at Cape Kennedy on 27 Jan. 1967. I hope to get the approval or the disapproval of as many people at NASA, and the U.S. Government, as I possibly can, to help bring this proposal to reality. I would truly appreciate your opinion on this matter, and any response from you, and others that might answer, will be forwarded to the P/M Gen's. office with my proposal. Thank you very much sir, and I look forward to hearing from you soon. All the best to you and yours. Respectfully yours, John Jensen, Sr." Collins writes back, "Dear Mr. Jensen, Roger Chaffee's father whose name I believe is Donald, has been trying hard for years to get this done. You might consider joining forces with him. He lives, I believe, in Michigan and I'm sure NASA would have his address. Good luck.” In fine condition. COA Scott Cornish and R&R COA.
