The eldest child (1778–1851) of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, Marie was the only member of the royal family to escape the guillotine during the Reign of Terror. ALS in French, one page, 5 x 8, no date [circa 1810–1814]. A untranslated note written at the bottom of a letter in another, unidentified hand, Marie’s contribution mentioning “My dear Lady Marie” (possibly the writer of the upper portion) and sending affectionate greetings to the recipient’s mother. In very good condition, with usual folds, complete horizontal tear to page (repaired from the reverse and not affecting any of Charlotte’s writing), scattered light soiling, toning, and wrinkling, and loss to blank portion of page at bottom.
