Description

Double your fun: Nifty, nearly “matched” pair of vintage autograph albums from a collector who asked each celebrity to sign twice

Terrific lot of two vintage autograph albums, circa 1930s, one 4.5 x 3.25, the other 6 x 4, containing dozens of ink signatures, a few with inscriptions or on affixed slips, most single-sided and one to a page (a mere few double-sided and/or sharing a page). The enterprising original owner apparently asked a number of the celebrities for a “double,” as many of the names appear in both books, largely in the same order, and often with the same dates. The signers include: Benjamin Harrison (two, both affixed), Mary Lord Harrison (two, each on a page with Benjamin), Charlie King, Bessie Love, Joan Crawford (two), Helen Wills Moody (two, one with a self-portrait sketch), Lawrence Tibbett (with a self-portrait sketch), Martin Broones (two, one with a musical quotation), several members of the Taft family (including Henry, Julia, and William Howard II), Eleanor Roosevelt (two), Anna Roosevelt Dall (FDR and Eleanor’s daughter; two, each on a page with Eleanor), Andy Clyde (two), Una Merkel (two), Freddie Bartholomew (two), Norma Shearer (two), Irene Castle McLaughlin (two), Jane Darwell (two), Eleanor Powell (two), Nelson Eddy (two), Jeanette MacDonald, Robert Taylor (two), Gene Raymond (two), Alice Marble, Charlotte Greenwood (adding her customary smiley face), Harold Lloyd, Kay Francis, Zeppo Marx, Ben Lyon, and William Powell. In fine condition, with mild scattered toning and the occasional minor brush or blot; the vast majority of the signatures are unusually clean, clear, bold, and eminently displayable! R&R COA.
