Description

Fifteen World Champion Yankee photos from the estate of controversial Yankee Jake Powell

Lot of fifteen vintage 8 x 10 George Burke photos of members of the 1938 and 1939 New York Yankees, each signed in fountain pen, with most inscribed to former controversial New York Yankee outfielder Jake Powell, who played for New York from 1936 to 1940. Photos come from Powell’s estate. Photos are of: Joseph Glenn, Bill Knickerbocker, Johnny Murphy, Frank Crosetti, Carle Combs, Joe Gordon, Spud Chandler, John Schulte, George Selkirk, Tom Henrich, Bump Hadley, Arthur Fletcher, Red Rolfe, Art Jorgens and Monte Pearson. Each photo is individually matted and framed to overall sizes of 11.5 x 13.5. Powell was reckless and prejudiced, he broke Tiger first baseman Hank Greenberg’s wrist in 1935, continually fought with other players, and was suspended in 1938 because of antiblack slurs during a radio interview. At age 40, he committed suicide in a Washington, D.C. police station while being questioned on a bad-check charge. In fine condition, with a touch of light silvering to a couple of photos. COA Steve Grad/PSA/DNA and R&R COA. Oversized.
