TLS, one page, 7.25 x 10.5, personal letterhead, April 25, 1938. Gardner writes to William Chapman of the International Press Bureau. In part: “The situation boils down to this: First, there is some competition for the second serial rights on my work. Second, there is apparently the feeling on the part of some magazines that where they pay high rates for the latest Perry Mason story, they don’t care to have publications which are, in a way, competitive, featuring at the same time a Mason story which apparently is in direct competition…. There are two other opportunities to dispose of second serial rights, one of them from someone who apparently covers the same territory you do, another from a magazine. In the long run, the decision to be made depends largely on the amount of available return…. In order to clarify the situation, suppose you make me a definite offer or, if you don’t care to do that, give me a conservative estimate of what you think syndication will amount to.” In fine condition, with mild toning, usual mailing folds, and tiny rust stain near top edge.
