British financier who became prime minister of South Africa in 1890 but was forced to resign in 1896 after attempting to overthrow the Boers in the Transvaal. He is probably best known in America as the benefactor of the prestigious Oxford University study scholarships that bear his name. ALS signed “C. J. Rhodes,” one page, 5 x 8, no date. A friendly letter to “My dear Curry.” In full: “When will you come and stay your room is ready whenever you will turn up.
