Author of Twice Told Tales, The Scarlet Letter, and The House of the Seven Gables. Ink signature, “Examined, Nath Hawthorne, Surveyor,” on an off-white 3 x 3.75 slip, clipped from a larger document, most likely from the 1840s while Hawthorne worked for a Customs House. At the bottom, written in another hand is “Port of Salem.” Matted and framed with a seated portrait of Hawthorne, to an overall size of 13 x 10.
