Distinguished actor (1907–1952) who was the first African-American to portray a white character on the American stage (in white face, yet). After becoming active in civil rights causes, he was blacklisted in McCarthy-era America and was forced to work abroad. Vintage glossy 10 x 8 photo, a scarce original publicity still from Alfred Hitchcock’s Lifeboat (1948), signed and inscribed in fountain pen, “To Louise, Canada Lee.” In fine condition, with tiny corner bends and a few subtle dings and surface impressions. R&R COA.
