Clay’s fish can swim with anyone: “I should be very glad to get one or two of your best fish to convince them that our fish are equal.”

ALS signed “H. Clay,” one page, 8 x 10, August 24, 1838. Clay contacts G. W. Anderson regarding the purchase of some fish for entertaining guests. In part, “Expecting Col. Hampton and some other gentlemen from So. Carolina here…I should be very glad to get one or two of your best fish to convince them that our fish are equal…The salmon, the pike or the whole fish would be preferred, and in the order in which I mention them.” Reverse bears a free franked envelope panel in Clay’s hand. Several mailing folds and a few wrinkles, otherwise fine condition. R&R COA.
