Description

Early Chagall letter discussing the exhibition of his painting “Les Fiancailles”

Scarce ALS in French, one page, 8 x 10.5, February 8, 1938. The artist writes to an unidentified correspondent regarding one of his works. In part (translated): “As I have told you, at the very beginning, my painting ‘Les Fiancailles’ [The Betrothal] is, at this moment, part of my show at the Palais des Beaux Arts in Brussels. After Brussels, the show will move to Ghent and Antwerp. Also as it so happens, this painting has been reserved by the Purchasing Commission for the Brussels Museum. As you can see, this will complicate matters, if you still need it.” In fine condition, with usual mailing folds (one touching first name of signature) and secretarial ink stamp near top edge. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
