Description

Down and out Down Under: A financially strapped Samuel Clemens signs a photo in Australia during his 1895 world tour

Vintage sepia 4.25 x 6 cabinet profile portrait photo, signed in fountain pen, “Sincerely yours, Mark Twain.” Signed and inscribed on the reverse, “To Mr. Lloyd, With the sincerest regards & esteem of S. L. Clemens, Melbourne, Oct. 26/95.” In 1895, when he was 60 years old, Twain attempted to rebuild his fortunes by making a reading tour around the world. Although his creditors were willing to accept 50% of the liabilities, Twain felt it right to pay off the debt in full. The Clemens arrived in Sydney, Australia, on Monday, September 16, 1895.  He performed there, in Melbourne, Adelaide, Horsham, Stawell, Ballarat, Bendigo, Maryborough, Geelong and Prahan.  On to New Zealand where he performed in Invercargill, Dunedin, Timaru, Oamaru, Christchurch, Auckland and Wellington.  Then back to Melbourne and Sydney for more “At Homes.”  In fine condition, with trimmed bottom edge, a couple trivial spots to left border and a few dings on reverse. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
