Fantastic color 4 x 6 British postcard reproduction of Warhol’s seminal 4 Campbell’s Soup Cans (1962), signed at the bottom in purple felt tip. Warhol (presumably) has also added a small purple felt tip arrow in the right margin, directing the viewer to turn over the postcard. In fine condition, with adhesive residue on the reverse, mild toning, and trivial soiling. Robert Indiana: "I knew Andy very well. The reason he painted soup cans is that he liked soup." (NY Times 12/1/02) Marcel Duchamp: "If you take a Campbell's Soup can and repeat it fifty times, you are not interested in the retinal image. What interests you is the concept that wants to put fifty Campbell's Soup cans on a canvas." The origin of the soup can concept has been attributed to many sources. Vito Giallo, the artist’s assistant from 1958 to 1959, stated that Warhol had soup for lunch every day and that "tomato soup was his favorite," which Warhol would eat while watching television. When the art critic G.R. Swenson asked him in 1963 why he painted soup cans, he replied, "I used to drink it, I used to have the same lunch every day, for twenty years." Warhol's first soup cans were exhibited in the early sixties. In 1968 and 1969 he also published portfolios of soup can prints. In 1985, he used soup can packaging for a series of small silkscreens.
