Replying to a scientific paper, Tennyson is self-deprecatory and confident simultaneously: “I am not very scientific, but I trust that I am not very much the contrary.”

English poet. The most famous poet of the Victorian age, he was a profound spokesman for the ideas and values of his times. ALS signed “Tennyson,” one page, 4.5 x 7, Farringford, Isle of Wight letterhead, December 27, 1885. In full: “Dear Sir, I thank you for your paper. I cannot pretend that I am not very scientific, but I trust that I am not very much the contrary. A happy Xmas! Yours faithfully, Tennyson.” In another hand, at lower right, is the notation: “Received by W.R. Dec. 27/85.” In fine condition, with vertical fold through first letter of signature, a few areas of trivial soling not affecting legibility. R&R COA.
