Description

Signed Roosevelt portrait postcard addressed to Yrigoyen in Buenos Aires

Vintage sepia 3.5 x 5.25 Pach Bros. postcard portrait with the imprinted legend “Theodore Roosevelt, President of the United States,” beneath the legend, boldly signed “T. Roosevelt” beneath the image. The photograph is copyrighted 1904, so it is quite possible this was signed as president. In very good condition, with light wear to the corners from a previous mounting, trivial soiling in the borders. The postcard is addressed in another hand to Mlle. [?] Yrigoyen in Buenos Aires. Hipolito Yrigoyen was an Argentine political leader, president of the republic (1916–22, 1928–30). In 1896 he became the leader of the Radicals, a bourgeois reform party. By propaganda, and sometimes by insurrection, he opposed the conservative regime. The electoral reform of Roque Sáenz Peña enabled the Radicals in 1916 to replace the landowning oligarchy and to elect Yrigoyen president. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
