Best remembered for the role of Mammy in Gone with the Wind (1939), opposite Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable, for which she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress on February 29, 1940, making her the first African American performer to win an Oscar. Also notably, she was the first African American to attend the Oscars as a guest. Vintage fountain pen signature and inscription, “Best Wishes to Kenneth Hardy from Hattie McDaniel, 4/23/42,” on a pale green, personal Warner Bros. Studio note card 5.5 x 3.25 card.
