ALS signed “C.L. Dodgson,” one page, 3.5 x 5.5, February 25, 1887. Christ Church Oxford. This letter concerns the facsimile Alice’s Adventures Under Ground, which was published at Christmas 1886. Having discovered that his young friend Mabel is in Germany, Dodgson writes to her mother, in part: “I had intended sending this to Mabel but finding it can only go with ends open, & not liking to risk the damage of its being ‘examined’ by Post Office officials, I prefer depositing it with you, to keep for her…” In fine condition. Dodgson met Mabel in 1877 when she was eight years old. In the unpublished typescript My Remembrances of Lewis Carroll, Mabel Burton recorded that Dodgson “wrote to mother saying he was sending a copy of Alice’s Adventuress Under Ground for her to keep for me until I returned home.” COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
