A letter entirely in Josephine’s hand, the first we’ve offered

Empress of the French (1804–1809) as the wife of Napoleon I. Married first to Alexandre de Beauharnais, she wed Napoleon Bonaparte in 1796. The marriage was annulled (1809) because of her alleged infertility. ALS in French, signed “Lapagerie Bonaparte,” (the real name of Empress Josephine was Lapagerie). One page, 4 x 6.5, April 23, 1799. Letter to an unknown recipient concerning a recommendation and a request, delivered by “Citizen Dupin.” Accompanied by a portrait of “La Femme de Napoleon,” a clipped signature of Francis Joseph Charles Napoleon, a clipped document with the writing of the Duke of Reichstadt, and a small, oval portrait miniature of Napoleon. In fine condition, with partially erased pencil notation beneath the date, a pale blue pencil notation in upper left, a few small areas of faint toning. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
