American Revolutionary political leader and army officer. In the war he served as military secretary to George Washington and as adjutant general and took part in a number of battles. He served in the Continental Congress (1777–78). As president (1778–81) of the supreme executive council of Pennsylvania he abolished slavery in Pennsylvania and caused (1778) Benedict Arnold to be prosecuted on charges of corrupt practices. DS signed “Jos. Reed,” one page, 7.5 x 6, March 1, 1781. Signed document addressed to Pennsylvania treasurer David Rittenhouse. This warrant was payment to Joseph Montgomery for expenses incurred as the Pennsylvania delegate to the Continental Congress. In part: “Pay to the Honorable Joseph Montgomery…for his attendance in Congress as a delegate for this State to the first instant.” This is an historic document as it relates to a ratifier of the U.S. Articles of Confederation.
