Sully encourages an aspiring artist: “After a careful inspection of your portfolio of views...they contain the essential requisites of excellence.”

British-born American painter of portraits and historical scenes, such as Washington's Passage of the Delaware (c. 1818). ALS signed “Thos. Sully,” one page, 8 x 9.5, Philadelphia, October 1, 1840. A letter to George Harvey. In part: “After a careful inspection of your portfolio of views in the United States which you propose to publish, I am of opinion that they contain the essential requisites of excellence - accuracy of delineation, with tasteful execution. Should your success in their publication proved equal to their merit, you will have reason to be satisfied with public encouragement.” In very good, with expected toning and edge wear, a few scattered creases.
