Description

Uncommon Henry Moore ALS referencing Unit One

British sculptor whose works are characterized by smooth organic forms. Uncommon ALS, one page, 7 x 9, August 30, 1933. Letter to Richard Bertram, curator at the Victoria and Albert Museum, who has requested photos of his work. In part, “I got a letter today from Ruth Clark saying Paul Nash asked her (as he hadn’t my present address) to write telling me you would like photographs of recent works by members of Unit One - & you want them by Friday.” Unit One was a loose collective of avant-garde artists and architects brought together by critic Herbert Read. Nash was the key instigator of this, basically modernist, group, whose existence was formally announced in The Times in June 1933, with a book of the artists statements being published the following year. It’s very likely that the photograph request was for that book. In fine condition, with a bit of scattered light foxing. R&R COA.
