TLS as president, one page, 7 x 8.75, White House letterhead, February 10, 1944. FDR sends thanks for a gift from an artist. In full: “Miss Suckley gave me on my birthday your very delightful sketch of Fala. I want to tell you, not only how much I like it, but that I think it is an excellent portrait. I would know it was Fala, anywhere, as it has all of his characteristics, and I am awfully glad to have it.” The recipient, Elizabeth N. Fairchild, was an illustrator; the “Miss Suckley” Roosevelt refers to in the letter was children’s author Margaret L. Suckley. Included with the Roosevelt letter is a ALS on a postcard from Suckley to Fairchild regarding Fairchild’s “dog” art; a copy of the 1942 book The True Story of Fala, written by Suckley and Alice Dalgleish and illustrated by Fairchild, with a presentation inscription, “For Elizabeth N. Fairchild, for doing him so beautifully,” signed by Suckley and Dalgleish. All of the items, plus the original mailing envelope and several copies of pages from the book, are attractively matted and shadow-box framed together to an overall size of 37.5 x 30.
