Description

“I’m delighted that you liked Gideon so much.”

Influential novelist and playwright who wrote Babbitt, Elmer Gantry, Main Street, and other classics, and the first American recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature. ALS, one page both sides, 7.25 x 10.25, personal letterhead, May 1 (likely circa 1943, as his novel was published that year). A letter to Father Murphy. In part: “I’m delighted that you like Gideon [Planish, Lewis’ novel] so much. I’ve also written this year one 30,000-word novelette for Cosmopolitan and one ditto for Good Housekeeping…Marcella has decided it is too impossible to get a decent stage job. How right she is! She has a marvelous post as editorial assistant. I hope I’m going to see you this year.” In fine condition, with scattered toning, heavier at the folds, and two diagonal strips of adhesive residue at the top border. R&R COA.
