Probably wishing he lived in the future he envisioned, the ailing author writes to his sister, “My eyes are still bad and my stomach is even worse”

French writer whose novels of technological adventure helped create the science fiction genre. Best known works include Voyage to the Center of the Earth, Around the World in Eighty Days, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, The Mysterious Island and The Island of Dr. Moreau. ALS in French, one page, 4 x 5.25, December 29, 1903. Letter to his sister, Anna Ducrest de Villeneuve. In full, “We’ve received your letter & good wishes that we need so much for our health. My eyes are still bad and my stomach is even worse. We also had news from Raymond and Andre. I’ll reply to them. I think you’ll get this letter, because I have had a lot of trouble reading the address indicated in Maubeuge. Honorine & I send our best regards to your large family.” In fine condition, with a bisecting horizontal mailing fold, some scattered light foxing and a couple light pencil notations.
