Description

Revolutionary war-dated document, from two weeks prior to the Siege of Yorktown, in which Governor Hancock orders his treasurer to make a payment

Revolutionary war dated DS, one page, 6.5 x 8.5, Commonwealth of Massachusetts letterhead, September 14, 1781. Governor Hancock orders to “Pay unto William Harris, Clerk in the Secretary’s Office the sum of forty-five pounds …in advance for toward wages, he to be accountable for the same.” Nicely signed at the conclusion in black ink, “John Hancock.” On this date Count De Grasse sent his ships up the Chesapeake Bay to transport the armies of Washington and Rochambeau to Yorktown. Two weeks later, Washington began his siege of Yorktown. Well done professional repairs to a few areas of trivial paper loss, none affecting signature, lightly trimmed edges and moderate folds, otherwise fine condition. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
